The Ouachita Blackberry, bred by the University of Arkansas, is a standout thornless blackberry variety celebrated for its large, glossy berries and vibrant sweet flavor that appeals to blackberry lovers, families, and wildlife alike. Ripening from mid-June through July, Ouachita delivers an early burst of summer sweetness perfect for fresh eating, cobblers, jams, jellies, and food plots. Its rich, well-balanced flavor and dependable production make it one of the most trusted varieties for Southern growers.
With erect, sturdy canes, Ouachita grows neatly in rows—excellent for forming a natural, productive hedge along fences, garden borders, or orchard rows. Requiring only 300 chill hours, it thrives in USDA Zones 6–9, performing beautifully in warm climates where reliability and flavor matter most. The plant is thornless, low-maintenance, and disease-resistant, offering growers an easy-care blackberry that produces consistently high yields without the hassle of thorns or complex pruning.
For anyone seeking a sweet, early-ripening, thornless blackberry bush that brings both beauty and abundance to home gardens, orchards, and food plots, the Ouachita Blackberry is a top-tier choice—trusted, productive, and packed with summer flavor.

| Pruning | Erect blackberries benefit from summer pruning. Remove the top one to two inches of new primocanes when they are 4' tall. This causes the canes to branch, increasing next year’s yields. Plants will require several pruning sessions to tip each cane as it reaches the four foot height. |
| Fertilization | Do not fertilize at planting. Once the trees are established, fertilize in early spring (Mar-April) as growth begins. Do not fertilize in the fall, which could promote late season tender growth that can be damaged by early frosts. |
| Watering | Newly planted trees should be watered regularly. This is the most critical step in the establishment of your new trees. Please see the Watering section under "How to plant and grow" in our Learning Center. |
