The Red Cuban Banana is a striking tropical fruiting plant prized for both its bold appearance and delicious fruit. Its tall, sturdy pseudostems are tinged with red, and the large, lush leaves bring instant exotic flair to any garden or patio. When in bloom, the plant produces dramatic purple bracts that reveal clusters of bananas.

The fruit of the Red Cuban Banana is shorter and plumper than common yellow bananas, with a reddish skin that ripens to a rich burgundy. Inside, the flesh is cream-colored with a sweet, slightly tangy flavor that’s excellent for fresh eating, smoothies, and desserts. Beyond its fruit, this variety also serves as an ornamental showpiece thanks to its vibrant foliage and colorful stems.

Though tropical by nature, Red Cuban Bananas can be grown in containers and overwintered indoors in cooler climates, making them an exciting and rewarding choice for adventurous gardeners.

Fertilization Do not fertilize at planting. Once the trees are established, fertilize in early spring (Mar-April) as growth begins. Do not fertilize in the fall, which could promote late season tender growth that can be damaged by early frosts.
Watering Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, especially during dry periods. Newly planted trees should be watered regularly. This is the most critical step in the establishment of your new trees. Please see the Watering section under "How to plant and grow" in our Learning Center.

At Chestnut Hill Outdoors, we’ve been shipping mail order trees for over 30 years. We’re experts at delivering healthy trees to your doorstep. All of our trees are container grown in root-enhancing pots, ensuring healthy root systems and much better success upon planting.
