The American Sycamore (Platanus occidentalis) is a majestic, fast-growing shade tree known for its massive size, distinctive bark, and long lifespan. Its broad, maple-like leaves provide dense summer shade, while its mottled bark—peeling away to reveal patches of white, gray, and green—adds striking year-round character.

Thriving in a wide range of soils, the Sycamore is especially well-suited for moist, low-lying areas, creek banks, and large open landscapes. It’s a favorite for parks, estates, and spacious properties where its impressive stature can be fully appreciated. In spring, inconspicuous flowers give way to unique round seed balls that persist into winter, adding ornamental and wildlife value.

Spacing 40' - 60'
Pruning Minimal pruning; remove dead/damaged branches in winter; train young trees for strong structure
Fertilization Do not fertilize at planting. Once the trees are established, fertilize in early spring (Mar-April) as growth begins. Do not fertilize in the fall, which could promote late season tender growth that can be damaged by early frosts.
Watering Newly planted trees should be watered regularly. This is the most critical step in the establishment of your new trees. Please see the Watering section under "How to plant and grow" in our Learning Center.

At Chestnut Hill Outdoors, we’ve been shipping mail order trees for over 30 years. We’re experts at delivering healthy trees to your doorstep. All of our trees are container grown in root-enhancing pots, ensuring healthy root systems and much better success upon planting.
