Bold, fragrant, and full of character, Thai Ginger—better known as Galangal—is a tropical perennial that brings both culinary firepower and ornamental beauty to your garden. With its upright, cane-like stems, glossy green foliage, and that unmistakable spicy, citrus-pine aroma, this plant offers the kind of sensory experience that makes tending the land feel downright exhilarating.

A favorite in Southeast Asian cuisine, Galangal is gaining traction among home growers who want to diversify their plantings with a high-value, specialty edible crop. Once established, this vigorous rhizome forms dense, harvest-ready clumps that regenerate year after year. Clip what you need for soups, curries, teas, and herbal uses—your plant keeps on giving. And when it sends up elegant white to pale pink flowers, it becomes as beautiful as it is useful, earning its place in any edible landscape, patio container, or shaded garden sanctuary.

Thai Ginger thrives in warm, humid climates and adapts well to containers, raised beds, and tropical-style garden plantings. With moist, well-drained soil and a steady supply of warmth, it rewards growers with dependable harvests and a fresh, aromatic ingredient you simply can’t match from the grocery store.

For gardeners who enjoy putting down roots and savoring the land’s bounty, Galangal brings a touch of adventure, a burst of flavor, and year-round tropical charm.

Fertilization Do not fertilize at planting. Once the trees are established, fertilize in early spring (Mar-April) as growth begins. Do not fertilize in the fall, which could promote late season tender growth that can be damaged by early frosts.
Watering Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, especially during dry periods. Newly planted trees should be watered regularly. This is the most critical step in the establishment of your new trees. Please see the Watering section under "How to plant and grow" in our Learning Center.

At Chestnut Hill Outdoors, we’ve been shipping mail order trees for over 30 years. We’re experts at delivering healthy trees to your doorstep. All of our trees are container grown in root-enhancing pots, ensuring healthy root systems and much better success upon planting.

In Spring we ship bare-root, dormant trees. All plants are dipped in a root gel before shipping and wrapped in plastic to retain moisture.

Spring: All trees are shipped bare-root.
Fall: All trees are shipped in containers.
