The ‘Ann’ Japanese Magnolia (Magnolia × soulangeana ‘Ann’), a standout selection from the Little Girl Magnolia series, is prized for its late-blooming habit, exceptional cold hardiness, and dramatic tulip-shaped flowers. Blooming later than most magnolias, ‘Ann’ reliably avoids early spring frost damage, making it an excellent choice for cooler climates as well as the South. Each spring, the tree is covered in large, lightly fragrant blossoms featuring deep reddish-purple exteriors with soft pink interiors, delivering bold color and refined elegance to the landscape.

Naturally compact and rounded, ‘Ann’ Magnolia is perfectly suited for small gardens, patios, foundation plantings, and mixed borders, where it serves as a stunning focal point without overwhelming the space. Flowers appear in mid to late spring, and in favorable conditions, the tree may reward growers with a second, lighter bloom in midsummer. After flowering, lush green foliage fills in, providing season-long structure and ornamental appeal.

For gardeners seeking a low-maintenance, cold-hardy flowering tree with reliable bloom timing and exceptional color, the ‘Ann’ Japanese Magnolia offers a perfect blend of beauty, resilience, and versatility.

Fertilization It is not recommended to fertilize trees at the time of planting or young trees. Excessive fertilizing may cause premature fruit drop. Apply a balanced slow release fertilizer after the tree is established and begins to break dormancy in spring.
Watering Newly planted trees should be watered regularly. This is the most critical step in the establishment of your new trees. Please see the Watering section under "How to plant and grow" in our Learning Center.
