The Elderberry Bush, commonly known as American Elderberry (Sambucus canadensis), is a vigorous, fast-growing native fruiting shrub prized for its large clusters of dark purple-black berries, fragrant white blooms, and outstanding value to wildlife, pollinators, and homesteads. In late spring, elderberry bushes burst into broad white flower clusters that draw bees and beneficial insects, followed by abundant berry production ideal for syrups, jams, wines, immune-supporting remedies, and wildlife forage.
Naturally adapted to moist soils, creek bottoms, and lowland areas, the Elderberry Bush thrives where many other shrubs struggle, yet adapts well to typical garden soils once established. Its dense, suckering growth habit makes it an excellent choice for hedgerows, privacy screens, food plots, erosion control, and habitat restoration projects. Birds and small mammals eagerly consume the fruit, while deer browse lightly and use the shrub for cover and shelter.
Cold-hardy, low-maintenance, and extremely productive, the Elderberry Bush is a cornerstone native plant for growers seeking a high-yield, multifunctional fruiting shrub that strengthens ecosystems while delivering dependable harvests year after year.

| Pruning | Prune annually in late winter or early spring while plants are dormant. Remove dead, damaged, or weak canes. Cut out older canes (3+ years old) to stimulate vigorous new growth |
| Watering | Water regularly during the first growing season to establish strong roots. Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Once established, elderberries are moderately drought tolerant but produce best with even moisture. |
