Fruit Trees for the South
Fruit trees for the South must be carefully selected for low chill requirements and long-term performance in warm southern climates. Chill hours are the cumulative number of winter hours below 45°F that fruit trees require to properly break dormancy, flower, and produce fruit. Many national nurseries and big-box stores sell fruit trees to southern states that are not low-chill fruit varieties and will never receive enough chill hours to fruit reliably in the South.
